Even though we know exercise is good for us, getting our bodies in motion can be tough.  It can be difficult to get started and stay consistent.  We can’t always count on feeling motivated, so what can we do?  Here are some practical tips to help you start and maintain an exercise routine:

Know Your Why: Clarify your purpose behind wanting to exercise. Whether it’s improving sleep, building endurance, enhancing flexibility, gaining strength, relieving physical discomfort, or boosting energy, understanding your “why” can provide the drive you need.

Find an Activity You Enjoy: Seek out exercises that you genuinely enjoy.  Whether it’s swimming, walking, yoga, or strength training, choosing activities that bring you pleasure increases the likelihood of sticking with them.  Prevent boredom by adding variety and new exercises.

Find a Workout Buddy: Consider partnering with a friend, family member, or colleague who shares similar fitness interests.  Hold each other accountable and offer encouragement to keep going.

Start Small: Commit to just a few minutes of exercise each day, gradually increasing the duration and intensity as you build momentum and confidence.

Create a Routine: Establish a consistent exercise schedule that aligns with your energy levels and daily commitments.  Planning workouts for the same time each day or week sets you up for success.

Remove Obstacles: Identify and eliminate barriers to exercise.  Make it easy to get started by sleeping in workout clothes or joining a gym located near your home or workplace.  Try EFT Tapping to let go of what holds you back.  See my YouTube video on Motivation to Exercise.

Plan Ahead: Reduce decision fatigue by planning your workouts in advance.  Determine specific exercises and schedules ahead of time to streamline your fitness routine.

Set Clear Goals: Define your fitness objectives clearly.  Whether it’s walking three miles or completing a marathon, having concrete goals focuses your efforts and makes progress measurable.

Visualize: Imagine how you will feel when you reach this goal.  See yourself doing the work to get there.

Celebrate Successes: Acknowledge and celebrate achievements along the way.  Keep a journal to track your fitness journey.  Cheer yourself on!
